This hastily scrawled log of travel expenses paints a vivid picture of life with the "Murderer''s Row" Yankees during spring training in St. Petersburg, Florida. 1925 was a poor year for Ruth and the Yankees, coming in the midst of the pennants they won from 1921-23 and 1926-28. Ruth gained a tremendous amount of weight in the winter preceding the 1925 season, prompting a pre-spring Arkansas spa visit. This is reflected in the journal''s first entry, "Ruth to Hot Springs, 76.23." The spa trip was not notably effective, as Ruth continued his dissolute lifestyle through the spring and had to be hospitalized before the season even began. The remainder of the journal mentions everyone from Hall of Fame pitcher Herb Pennock to groundskeeper Phil Schenck. Several entries cover expenses for Hall of Fame umpire Bill McGowan, who handled the spring games. Another entry reads "Meal money Dugan, Hoyt, Gehrig 49.50." The expenses cover railroad fare, hotels, scorecard printing, baseballs, and much more. This evocative document was found among the papers of New York business manager Ed Barrow, and appears to be in his hand.
